PEDRO — The Coal Grove Lady Hornets just kept taking turns.

The scoring rotation by the Lady Hornets help key a 65-56 Ohio Valley Conference win over the Rock Hill Redwomen on Monday.

Ashley Adkins led Coal Grove with 21 points, Darrien Hankins had a career-high 19 points, and Jacy Jones added 8 points, 10 rebounds and 6 assists.

“Adkins had 12 points in the second quarter, and once they started keying on Adkins then Jones was able to take some of the pressure off her by handling the ball,” said Lady Hornets’ coach Rick Roach.

“Jones started dishing out assists, most of them to Hankins. Katey Erwin did a great job on defense with four blocks.”

Brook Knipp led Rock Hill with 19 points despite suffering the affects from the flu over the past two days. Chelsea Harper had 18 points and 8 rebounds and Katie Johnson had 16 points and 8 rebounds.

Coal Grove’s balance caused the Redwomen defensive problems.

“Every time we took one player away, someone else would step up. We finally got after Adkins but we couldn’t stop Hankins in the second half,” said Rock Hill coach Alvin Carpenter.

Knipp had 6 points in the first quarter as Rock Hill (6-9, 0-7) took a 10-8 lead. Knipp scored 7 more points in the second quarter by the 12 points by Adkins gave Coal Grove a 26-25 lead.

Hankins scored 10 points in the third quarter and it was 47-36. She got 9 more points in the fourth quarter to offset 10 points by Harper to seal the Lady Hornets’ win.

Coal Grove visits Portsmouth Tuesday in a make-up game.
