Memphis beats Marshall; Ohio tops Ball State

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Will Barton scored a career-high 29 points and grabbed eight rebounds Saturday night as Memphis pulled away from Marshall at the end for an 83-76 victory over the Thundering Herd.

The win, the third straight for the Tigers (15-6, 6-1 Conference USA), left them tied at the top of the conference standings with Southern Mississippi, which won earlier Saturday night at Central Florida.

Tarik Black worked inside for 19 points on 8-of-11 shooting, part of Memphis converting 30 of 54 shots (55.6 percent). Wesley Witherspoon finished with 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting.

Shaquille Johnson led Marshall (13-8, 4-3) with 21 points, while Damier Pitts scored 19, converting 5 of 8 shots. DeAndre Kane added 15 points for the Thundering Herd, who lost their fourth straight.

The game was close throughout with neither team having a double-digit lead. There were 13 ties and 14 lead changes in the game.

Ohio 59, Ball State 54

ATHENS (AP) — Walter Offutt scored five of his 13 points in the final 3 minutes to help Ohio hold on for a 59-54 win over Ball State Saturday.

The Bobcats (17-4, 5-2 Mid-American Conference) led 34-27 at halftime and pushed their lead to 43-31. The Cardinals then went on a 15-3 run.

Ball State (12-6, 4-3) took its first lead since the game’s opening five minutes, 54-43, on Tyler Koch’s 3 with 3:19 remaining.

Offutt then made a layup, missed the ensuing chance at a three-point play and Jarrod Jones missed one of his two foul shots for the Cardinals, making it 55-55 with 2:33 to go.

Offutt broke the tie with a layup and then made a free throw to put the Bobcats up by three with 27 seconds left.

Jones finished with 11 points and 15 rebounds and Chris Bond had 14 and 12 for the Cardinals.
