Pointers use long-range shooting to rout Royals

SOUTH POINT — The South Point Pointers ended the regular season the way it began: making long-range shots.

In the season opener, the Pointers made 16 3-pointers against a Kentucky school — Sheldon Clark— but lost 86-74.

On Senior Night Saturday, the Pointers were making 3-pointers again against a Kentucky schools as they drained 14 in an 86-47 rout of the Rose Hill Royals.

Senior Austin Jeffreys led the Pointers with 27 points including five 3-pointers. Sophomore Brandon Barnes had 20 points as he dialed up six trifectas and sophomore Kurt Adams had 14 points as he made a pair of triples.

“Austin and Brandon were on fire to start the game. They shot the ball well all night,” said Pointers’ coach Chris Barnes. “Kurt Adams had another good game. He’s shot the ball well the last two games.”

Jeffreys and Barnes each made four 3-pointers in the first quarter as the combined for all 24 points and it was 24-7.

The lead continued to grow in the second quarter and it was 46-21 at the half.

Adams came out and scored 8 points in the third quarter as the Pointers outscored the Royals 28-16 to open up a 74-37 cushion.

Troy Stafford scored 19 points, Andrew Whilhoite 12 and Chris Dudley 10 for Rose Hill (1-26).

The Pointers play at River Valley on Tuesday.
