McDERMOTT — Two lopsided losses didn’t seem to rattle the young St. Joseph Female Flyers.

The Female Flyers lost 55-21 and 49-24 in two earlier meetings against the Portsmouth Notre Dame Lady Titans.

Although the Female Flyers lost Saturday’s Division IV sectional title game to the same Titans, St. Joseph stayed in the game until the fourth quarter before falling 38-25.

“We battled them. It was a good performance by our kids,” said St. Joseph coach Nick Miller. “We had our chances and we just turned it over too many times.”

Hannah Miller had 12 points and 9 rebounds for the Female Flyers. Sarah Neal grabbed 8 rebounds and Haley Bartram came up with 4 steals.

Jen Arnzen had 12 points and Katie Kayser 9 to lead the Lady Titans (19-2).

Four different players scored as the Lady Titans took a 9-3 first quarter lead. Bartram’s 3-pointer was the Female Flyers’ only score.

Arnzen hit a 3-pointer to put Notre Dame up 14-11 late in the half. Hannah Miller — who had 8 points in the quarter — sank a pair of foul shots and the Female Flyers trailed just 14-13 at the break.

Kayser had 5 points in the third quarter to match St. Joseph’s output as the Lady Titans went up 24-18. Arnzen scored 6 points in the fourth quarter as Notre Dame continued to pull away.

Despite the loss, coach Miller was pleased with the progress of the program.

“We have four seniors and they meant a lot to our program. They did a lot for our girls and the program,” said coach Miller. ‘I was happy our kids competed.”

The Female Flyers finished the season 11-11.
