Sam Matkins

Sam Lynd Matkins, 73, of Pedro passed into Heaven surrounded by his family and special friends Wednesday, March 21, 2012, from the home of his daughter.

The Ironton native was born Sammy Lynd Shamhart, May 6, 1938 to the late Roberta Lee Bagwell Shamhart and Kermit Glen Shamhart. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Dorothy Long Matkins.

Sam was a 1957 graduate of Rock Hill High School and was a veteran who proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corp. Semper Fi. Sam was a former employee of AmCast, (formerly the Dayton Malleable Iron Company) and the Rock Hill Local School District. He was an avid coon hunter and loved his Tree Walker dogs. He was a lifelong member of the NRA.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Dirk Allen Matkins and his uncles, Richard “Dick” Haas and Carl Shamhart.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Jackie and Lance Harris of Pedro; a son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Angie Matkins of Ironton; a daughter-in-law, Debbie (Cooper) Rister and Ron Rister of Ironton and his grandchildren, Landon (Holly) Harris, Michelle Matkins, Ashley (Tyson) Murphy, Brandon (Melissa) Matkins, Kelsey (Dustin) Harper, Samantha (Nick) Bryant, Joseph Matkins, Lisa (Shawn) Smith and Lindsey Baldridge; his great grandchildren, Samuel Aiden Matkins, Noah Cabe Matkins, Ryder Harris Murphy, Carter Ryan Harris, Caton Renee Harris, Madison Rose and Eli Baldridge; aunts, Mary Haas, Darlene Leadingham, and Elizabeth Shamhart; an uncle, Roger Shamhart; sisters-in-law, Avanelle Jenkins, Diane Long, Linda Long, and Ann Adams and brother-in-law, Roy and Kay Long. Sam’s life was enriched by many special family and friends, whom he loved greatly. Sam leaves his family with a rich heritage of love. He leaves an indelible print on the lives he touched.

Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Saturday on his property at the Matkins Family Cemetery with graveside military rites provided by the U.S. Marine Corps. and with Pastor Greg Frasure officiating. Joel Baisden

Joel Baisden, 77, of South Point, died Thursday, March 22, 2012, at his residence. Schneider-Griffin Funeral Home, Chesapeake, is in charge of arrangements, which are incomplete.

 

Gladys Hager

Gladys Marlynn Hager, 81, of Chesapeake, died Wednesday, March 21, 2012, at the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House in Huntington, W.Va. Funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Hall Funeral Home.
