SCOTTOWN — A man who went missing March 13 from his home in eastern Lawrence County has been found alive and in relatively good condition in Huntington, W.Va., Lawrence County Sheriff Jeff Lawless said Monday afternoon.

Charles Shoemaker, 61, of 371 State Route 218, was found walking along 20th Street just after 1 p.m.

“His family said they were taking him to St. Mary’s (Medical Center),” Lawless said. “He’s disoriented and hungry.”

Shoemaker walked away from his home. His family asked for help from authorities two days later.

Since then, the sheriff’s office, Rome Township Volunteer Fire Department and numerous other agencies fanned out across the area to look for him.

Lawless said the Buckeye Search and Rescue Canine Unit had even gone out Saturday looking for the missing man and then offered a reward in the matter.

Lawless said he will meet with the family later today and urge them to get a Project Lifesaver bracelet for Shoemaker.

The bracelet allows the person to be tracked if they wander away from their house. The program is operated through the sheriff’s office.
