ASHLAND, Ky. — School was in session Tuesday and the Ironton Fighting Tigers learned a lesson.

The youthful Fighting Tigers were schooled by the Ashland Tomcats as they suffered a 10-0 loss is six innings.

“Our youth and inexperienced showed. We have some untested pitchers and this was the first time they’ve had to go against varsity competition,” said Ironton coach Tobey Schreck.

“And give Ashland credit. They’re a pretty good team.”

Ironton had six hits with Maurice Phillips and Jacob Friend each going 2-3. Derek Battise was 1-2 and Trey Spencer 1-3.

Ashland (2-1) collected 14 hits with Logan Salow going 4-5, Joe Stewart 3-4, Evan Yongue 2-4 and Jared Slone 2-3.

Yongue got the win as he struck out six and walked two.

Ironton (1-1) threatened on several occasions but couldn’t get the clutch hit.

Steve Easerling and Battise both walked with two outs in the first, Philips and Friend singled with two outs in the second and fourth innings, and Battise singled and Nick Heaberlin was hit by a pitch in the fifth.

After Ashland got a run in the first inning, the Tomcats erupted for six more in the second on an error, three walks and four hits including a double by Cade O’Bryan.

“Ashland hit the ball well,” said Schreck.

Ironton hosts Fairland on Thursday.
