CINCINNATI (AP) — The Reds claimed right-handed reliever Alfredo Simon off waivers from the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday, looking for help in their depleted bullpen.
The 30-year-old reliever missed part of spring training with a strained groin. He was placed on waivers after Toronto scored six runs in two innings off him during a game last week.
The Reds didn’t immediately add him to the roster, which is full. Cincinnati opens the season Thursday against Miami.
Simon saved 17 games for Baltimore in 2010. He split time between the bullpen and the rotation last season, going 4-9 with a 4.90 ERA overall.
The Reds have lost closer Ryan Madson to a torn elbow ligament. Setup man Nick Masset will open the season in the disabled list with an inflamed pitching shoulder.
