Not too late to sign up for cleanup event

It is still not too late to take part in something that is bigger than any one individual, bigger than just the tangible results.

Saturday marks the fifth year of the countywide cleanup event that will bring more than a thousand volunteers together with a common bond of community pride and the desire to make Lawrence County a more beautiful place.

This local effort — spearheaded by the Lawrence-Scioto Solid Waste Management District — is part of the Keep America Beautiful Great American Cleanup, the nation’s largest annual community improvement program.

More than 50 local groups consisting of hundreds of volunteers will donate a few hours of their time and some hard work for the good cause.

There will be a kick-off ceremony at 9 a.m. at the new farmer’s Market area at Depot Square on the corner of Second and Vernon streets.

Anyone who wants to be a part of this still has time.

You can just show up at the Ironton kick-off or call (740) 532-1231 to pre-register. Registration will help ensure groups receive garbage bags, gloves and more. For more information, visit the solid waste management district web site at www.lsswmd.org.

Even if you aren’t interested in being a part of the organized efforts, you can still give back by cleaning up the area around your home or business.

Every little bit helps and our community will be more beautiful and inviting for it.
