Chesy advances with sectional win

SOUTH POINT — The Chesapeake Panthers are continuing their late-season surge.

The freshman-laden Panthers put together another solid game as they beat the South Point Pointers 6-1 on Wednesday in the Division III sectional tournament.

Freshman pitcher Blake Lester got the complete-game win as he scattered six hits, struck out seven and walked one.

Chesapeake (6-14) visits Portsmouth West at 11 a.m. Saturday in the sectional finals.

South Point scored its run in the bottom of the first inning when Jesse Lien walked, moved up on a ground out and scored following a pair of wild pitches.

But the Panthers took the lead for good with two runs in the third inning.

Jacob Henson and Logan Chapman singled, Brandon Noble walked to load the bases and Tommy Noble walked to force in a run. Mikey Walters then hit a sacrifice fly and it was 2-1.

Chesapeake broke loose with four runs in the fourth inning.

Brett Curry, Quinton Harris and Henson all singled to load the bases. A wild pitch scored a run and then Chapman bunted for a hit. Lester reached on an error as a run scored, Brandon Noble hit a sacrifice fly and an error on the play allowed the final run to score.

The Panthers had nine hits with Chapman, Lester, Curry and Henson all going 2-4.

Brandon Boggs was 2-3 for the Pointers.
