IRONTON (AP) – The family of a man who died in a southern Ohio jail of a drug overdose has sued the county, saying negligence by jail employees led to his death and that his constitutional rights were violated.

The family of Timothy Conwell filed the lawsuit in federal court in Cincinnati on Friday against Lawrence County and employees, including its sheriff and jail physician. The lawsuit says Conwell was admitted to the jail in Ironton on Oct. 14, 2011, suffering from an oxycodone overdose. The lawsuit charges Conwell received no treatment and died that night in jail.

The family’s attorney says Conwell’s family hopes to spur jail reforms with the lawsuit that seeks unspecified compensatory and punitive damages.
