OAK HILL — The Oak Hill Oaks were enough to deal with, but the Chesapeake Panthers added an extra opponent in their season opener on Friday.

Themselves.

The Panthers struggled with numerous mistakes in a 33-7 loss to the Oaks.

“We were our own worst enemy,” said Panthers’ coach Andy Clark. “We’d get something going and shoot ourselves in the foot.

“We played bad, but give Oak Hill credit. They whipped us up front. We didn’t block them all night.”

Playing without tackle Mark McMillan and missing fullback and linebacker Chad Meadows for the season with a broken fibula and tibia, the Panthers were limited to 80 total yards and just 54 rushing on 27 attempts.

Jacob Collins was one of the bright spots for Chesapeake as he gained 58 yards on 11 carries. Devon Thompson had two receptions for 25 yards and returned a punt 80 yards for the Panthers’ only touchdown.

The Oaks racked up 382 yards of offense including 285 on the ground. Wes Harden ran 19 times for 161 yards and Devon Davis added 113 on 16 tries. Quarterback Drew Haislop was 4 of 8 passing for 97 yards and two touchdowns.

Davis scored at the 9:06 mark of the first quarter to put the Oaks up 7-0. Haislop threw touchdown passes of 32 yards to Luke Hammond with 8:45 left in the half and a 35-yard strike to Willy Harden with four seconds on the clock and it was 21-0 at the half.

“We were in prevent coverage and let the guy get behind us,” said Clark.

Thompson’s punt return cut the deficit to 21-7, but Oak Hill scored twice in the fourth quarter on a 38-yard run by Harden and a 10-yard scamper by Davis with just 1:49 to go.
