WILLOW WOOD — When you have a running game like the Symmes Valley Vikings, you learn to do things on the run.

The Vikings not only ran for 530 yards on offense but made some quick adjustments on defense as they routed the Southeastern Panthers 67-32 on Friday.

While the offense was moving the ball, the defense gave up two first-quarter touchdowns. After a few adjustments, the Vikings outscored the Panthers 33-0 in the second quarter to ignite the easy win.

“We made some adjustments and our kids did a good job adjusting on the run,” said Vikings’ coach Rusty Webb.

Leading the ground game was Alec Herrell with 153 yards and two touchdowns on six carries. Tyler Rowe ran six times for 114 yards and three scores, and D.J. Miller had 55 on five tries.

The backups had big numbers as Dustin Holbrook ran four times for 84 yards and Kyle Vallance carried three times for 75 yards.

“We finished our blocks. Our offensive line did a nice job,” said Webb. “Our kids did an outstanding job on both sides of the ball.”

The Panthers led 7-0 early but the Vikings recovered a fumble at the 5-yard line and Rowe scored on the next play to make it 7-6.

Travis Abner hit Dez Perkins on a 62-yard pass play to up the lead to 14-6, but the Vikings went 45 yards in six plays with Herrell running 5 yards for the score. Miller added the conversion to tie the game.

Symmes Valley (2-0) then scored five touchdowns in the second quarter to lead 47-14 at the half.

Miller had a 27-yard TD run and the Vikings had the lead for good at 20-14.

Following an interception, the Vikings went 50 yards in three plays as Rowe ran 3 yards for the score. Holbrook added the conversion and it was 28-14.

On the Vikings’ next possession, Herrell ran 57 yards for a touchdown on the first play and it was 34-14.

Following an exchange of punts, the Vikings needed just two plays to go 27 yards capped by Austin Baldwin’s 15-yard scoring pass from Rowe. Ben Ferguson kicked the extra point.

The fifth score came with just 36 seconds left in the half as Holbrook carried the final 3 yards.

Symmes Valley opened up a 51-14 lead in the third quarter on a 21-yard run by Mays and a 65-yard romp by Vallance. Ferguson kicked both conversions.

Mays’ run was set up by a kickoff return to the 21-yard line.

The Panthers got a 24-yard scoring by Alex Gordy and a 49-yard jaunt from Perkins to start the fourth quarter, then had a drive stopped at the 1-yard line. On the Vikings’ first play, Rowe went 99 yards for the score.

The final score was a 33-yard field goal by the Panthers’ Dylan Miles.
