WAYNE, W.Va. — The Class AA defending state champions didn’t miss a beat as they opened their season with a win.

The Wayne Pioneers jumped out to a 26-6 first quarter lead and went on to beat the Chesapeake Panthers 58-12 on Friday.

The Panthers (0-2) managed 265 yards offense with 179 coming on the ground. Nate Jones had 103 yards on six carries including a 43-yard scoring run in the first quarter that tied the game at 6-6.

But Wayne scored three more times in the quarter including a 72-yard fumble return by Brandon Spurlock that swung the momentum completely in favor of the Pioneers.

Spurlock had 88 yards on nine carries to lead a strong ground game. Wayne ran 46 times for 404 yards as 12 different players carried the ball.

Quarterback Caleb Lindsey was 4 of 11 passing for 69 yards and no interceptions, but the Panthers fumbled six times and lost three.

Chesapeake visits Symmes Valley this Friday.
