The Thundering Herd shot 289 on Tuesday at Guyan Golf and Country Club for a total 54-hole score of 853 (1-over-par). Marshall finished tied with Ohio State, the two-time defending champion of the invitational.

However, Ohio State was deemed the second place team based on the tiebreaker system.

First-year head coach Matt Grobe’s team was led by senior Nathan Kerns who on Tuesday shot a 2-under-par 69 to finish in second place.

The Ironton native was one stroke short of tying and forcing a playoff with the eventual champion. He wrapped up the two day event with a 8-under-par 205.

“Our guys played really good, despite having some shots that they would want back,” Grobe said. “Overall we played well as a team and each kid finished their round strong.”

Korey Ward of Xavier won the individual title after shooting a 2-under-par 69 on Tuesday to conclude the event at 9-under-par (204), one shot in front of Kerns.

The team champions were Virginia Tech. The Hokies shot a 16-under-par 836 over 54 holes to win their first Marshall Invitational title.

Jeremy Rogers used an even par 71 in the final round to finish in a tie for eighth at 2-under-par. Fellow Herd golfer Brian Anania had a 2-over-par 73 Tuesday to finish tied at 35th.

Next up for men’s golf will be the Cardinal Intercollegiate hosted by Louisville in Simpsonville, Ky. The two day tournament runs from Sept. 24-25.
