HAMLIN, W.Va. — The St. Joseph Flyers held senior night on the road.

Trailing 2-0 at the half, seniors Nick Roach, Eli Lewis and Justin Mahlmeister stepped up to make big plays as the Flyers rallied to beat the Lincoln County Panthers 3-2 Wednesday in a soccer game.

“Coaches coach and players play,” said Flyers’ coach Tim Hopkins. “We made some halftime adjustments to our overall shape and attacking strategy, but the deciding factor was our seniors taking charge of the match the moment the second half began.”

Roach scored from 12 yards out on an unassisted goal at the 10:43 mark as the Flyers cut the deficit in half.

One minute and 18 seconds later, Mahlmeister’s free kick from the 18-yard line led to a header by Roach from 30 yards out to tie the game. It was the first assist as a goalkeeper for Mahlmeister.

Lewis then scored on a penalty kick with 18:37 on the clock to give the Flyers the lead.

Mahlmeister had three saves and St. Joseph had 12 shots on goal compared to seven for the Panthers.

The Flyers played at Wheelersburg on Thursday and host Southeastern at noon Saturday and New Boston next Thursday for senior night.
