PORTSMOUTH — The Portsmouth Trojans turned up the dial on their defense.
The Trojans held South Point to 30 point through three quarters and limited leading scorer Brandon Barnes to two points as they beat the Pointers 67-52 on Tuesday.
“If we don’t score, we can’t win. Portsmouth did a fantastic job. They did as good of a defensive job against us as I’ve seen,” said Pointers’ coach Chris Barnes.
“We didn’t turn it over a lot, but when we did they turn them into layups.”
Payne Meadows scored 23 points to lead the Pointers (3-5). Kurt Adams had 14 including four 3-pointers.
Jayllen Carter scored 22 points and Ky’re Allison 19 to pace the Trojans (3-4).
Portsmouth led 15-10 after the first quarter and 31-18 at the half. It was 53-30 after three quarters.
Austin Majher hit a 3-pointer and Adams scored 8 straight points as the Pointers got within 11 points in the fourth quarter but the Trojans began to pull away again.
