HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) — Jabari Joyner’s 3-pointer with 58 seconds left gave Delaware State a three-point lead, and the Hornets held on for a 53-51 nonconference victory at Marshall Wednesday night.
Delaware State (6-8) led 31-19 with 15 minutes left, but Marshall (7-7) chipped at the advantage and tied the game 41-all on Nigel Spikes’ dunk with 3:48 left. The teams exchanged the lead four times in the ensuing 2 minutes, the last Chris Lewis’ free throws that put the Hornets up 46-45 with 1:51 left.
Marshall’s Kelvin Amayo hit 1 of 2 foul shots for a 46-all tie, then Joyner drained his go-ahead trey for Delaware State’s final lead. Marshall twice pulled within a point after that, but the Hornets hit two free throws to re-extend the lead each time.
All five of Joyner’s points came in the final minute. Casey Walker led the Hornets with 13 points.
Pittman finished with 17 points.
