CHESAPEAKE — The Chesapeake Lady Panthers looked a gift horse in the mouth.
The Lady Panthers made just 10 of 22 free throw attempts in losing 46-45 to the River Valley Lady Raiders Thursday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.
“Foul shots and layups killed us. We’ve lost a couple of games this year when fouls hooting was the difference,” said Lady Panthers’ coach Chris Ball.
“Their ability to make foul shots in the fourth and an our inability to make them was the key. Moore hit a big 3 and they made their free throws and we didn’t. You have to give River Valley the credit.”
River Valley missed three foul shot attempts in the first half but was 8 of 8 at the line in the second half. Chesapeake was 4 of 11 from the line in the second half and 3 of 8 in the fourth quarter.
Kaylee Curry had 15 points and 10 rebounds to lead Chesapeake (10-7, 2-5). Jackie Nelson and Sydnee Hall scored 10 points each. Anna Mayo had 10 rebounds and 5 steals.
“Anna does a lot of good stuff and gives us some quality minutes. She’s been a good senior leader,” said Ball.
Leia Moore scored 21 points and Cady Gilmore scored 14 for River Valley (4-13, 2-6).
Chesapeake led 8-5 after the first quarter. Curry scored 7 points in the second quarter to offset 5 points by Courtney Smith and the lead was 22-16 at the half.
Gilmore scored 7 points and Moore 6 as River Valley rallied to take a 31-30 lead. Hall had 6 of Chesapeake’s 8 points in the quarter.
Moore — who scored 9 points in the fourth quarter — hit a 3-pointer with under two minutes to play that put River Valley up 42-41 and Gilmore was 4 of 4 at the line to make it 46-42.
Jackie Nelson nailed a trey for Chesapeake with one second left, but River Valley was able to get the ball inbounds and run out the clock to end the game.
