COAL GROVE — The Coal Grove Lady Hornets’ seniors shared the spotlight along with the basketball.

The Lady Hornets’ seniors Ashley Adkins, Katey Erwin, Taylor Fleming and Darrien Hankins combined for a season-high 17 assists in a 58-46 win over the Raceland Lady Rams on Monday.

“The girls wanted to show what a close-knit group they were,” said Lady Hornets’ coach Rick Roach with a chuckle.

“But the girls did a nice job. We haven’t been on the court since last week so I was a little nervous coming into senior night. The layoff showed during the first half. We were only able to score 20 points. But give credit to our defense.”

Sophomore Jacy Jones scored 17 points to lead the Lady Hornets (13-7). Adkins scored 13 points and junior Morgan Sites scored 10.

Savannah Mackie and Savannah Cotton scored 11 points each and Krystal Keeton 10 points for Raceland (4-19).

Coal Grove led 11-10 after the first quarter but Raceland rallied to take a 21-20 halftime lead.

“We tried to jump defenses to get them a little confused and they couldn’t get in any rhythm the first half, but neither could we. Give credit to Raceland’s defense for that,” said Roach.

But Coal Grove found its rhythm in the second half while the defense continued to play well. The Lady Hornets outscored Raceland 17-5 in the third quarter to take a 37-26 lead.

Both teams picked up the scoring in the fourth quarter but Coal Grove out-pointed Raceland 21-20 to seal the win.

The Lady Hornets close out Ohio Valley Conference play Thursday at Chesapeake.
