The Beatles recorded it and the Ironton Lady Fighting Tigers played it.
“Come Together” was the song and it was a good tune for the Lady Tigers who slipped past the Rock Hill Redwomen 4-2 on Thursday.
Ironton was playing without star shortstop Rebekkah Potter who was out with an injury. Ironton coach Missy Fields said her team really came together to overcome the loss.
“With (Potter) out, I challenged the girls for someone to step up. Several listened and did just that,” said Fields. “(Taylor) Monk played a great game at shortstop tonight for her first varsity game in that spot.
“Kylie Barcus played a good game in centerfield, Karlee McMackin made some awesome catches in her first game in left field, and Laken White had a good defensive game and she and (Saige) Fields had a couple of putouts from home to third base.”
Erin Wetzel got the win as she struck out three and walked three.
Sami Nixon got the loss as she gave up only five hits, struck out eight and walked one.
Ironton took a 2-0 lead in the third inning.
Taylor Hannan was hit by a pitch, Saige Fields singled and both moved up on a ground out. McMackin then delivered a two-run single.
Rock Hill got within 2-1 in the fourth when Kaelynn Ellis and Sami Dillon singled and Jenna Lane had an RBI single.
The Redwomen tied the game in the top of the fifth while Ironton’s defense prevented another run.
Nixon and Brooke Hanshaw singled but Barcus threw home and Saige Fields’ relay throw got the runner at third. Kenzi Harrah then singled home Hanshaw to tie the game.
Ironton got the winning runs in the bottom of the inning.
Monk singled, stole second and scored on Andi Kratzenberg’s double. McMackin doubled home the insurance run.
McMackin was 2-3 with three RBIs. Dillon was 2-2 and Hanshaw and Lane 2-4 for Rock Hill.
On Friday, Ironton hosts Raceland and Rock Hill visits Wellston.
