St. Joseph Flyers’ coach Brent Wirzfeld learned whom he could turn to in a pinch.

With the game tied in the bottom of the seventh inning, pinch-hitter Trey Young singled home the winning run as the Flyers beat the Huntington St. Joseph Fighting Irish 5-4 on senior night last Thursday.

“That was a good win. Trey had a huge hit. It was a good clutch hit and to do it on senior night made it even more special,” said Wirzfeld.

The Flyers (13-7) trailed 4-3 going into the bottom of the seventh.

Cole Willis started the inning with a double and pinch-runner Shannon Litton went to third when Jacob Clark grounded out.

Eli Lewis walked and Grant Geswein got a clutch hit of his own with a game-tying RBI single.

Young was called upon and spanked the first pitch into left field for the walk-off game winner.

The Flyers took a 1-0 lead in the first when Hunter Pemberton doubled, moved up on Joseph Payton’s ground out and scored on a sacrifice fly by Justin Mahlmeister.

Clark walked and Lewis belted a two-run homer in the second inning and it was 3-0.

The Irish tied the game with three runs in the fifth and took the lead with a run in the sixth to set the stage for the Flyers’ dramatic comeback.

Mahlmeister got the win in relief. In 2.2 innings he struck out four, gave up one hit, one unearned run and did not walk a batter.
