Replacing the bridge on County Road 22, also known as Little Storms Creek Road/Lawrence Street, is a collaboration among Lawrence County, Ohio Department of Transportation and the federal government.

The project, which began Monday, will replace the existing bridge with a single-span pre-stressed concrete box beam structure.

Handling the project is DGM Incorporated of Beaver, who was awarded a contract for $916,451. The majority of that — $811,378 — will come from the federal government . The state will pay $79,000 that was awarded to the Lawrence County Transportation Improvement District, which was dedicated to the project, and the county will contribute $26,072.

However, Lawrence County has already invested $77,237 in engineering costs from Korda Engineers of Columbus for the design and $1,000 for land acquisition, according to County Engineer Doug Cade.

All of the county’s portion of the project comes from Motor Vehicle Gas Tax funds.

“It is a county road project, but if a project like this is going to receive federal funds, we have to manage the project,” Kathleen Fuller, public information officer for ODOT District 9, said. “Not all county jobs will go through ODOT. It depends on how they structure the project.”

The project will take up to 120 days to complete with work expected to be finished by late summer.

The road will be shut down at the construction site near the overpass at U.S. 52. Until the project is completed, traffic will be detoured at County Road 21 or Porter Gap Road and State Route 93.
