LUCASVILLE — The one thing the South Point Pointers didn’t want to happen was a fast start by the Lucasville Valley Indians.
They didn’t get what they wanted.
The Indians jumped in front 27-0 in the first quarter and went on to beat the South Point Pointers 62-29 Friday.
Pointers’ coach Rick Marcello said the difference was the Valley interior line.
“We couldn’t do anything on the line on either side of the ball,” said Marcello. “(Valley) was very solid. They ran the ball well.”
Nate Arnett ran nine times for 122 yards and two touchdowns to lead Valley (5-0). He also returned an interception for a touchdown in the first quarter explosion.
Gage Townson was 10 of 22 passing for 188 yards and three touchdowns with two interceptions for the Pointers (4-1) who suffered their first loss. He also ran seven times for 92 yards and a touchdown.
The Pointers’ Josh Browning caught three passes for 85 yards and a score and teammate Mason White had three receptions for 69 yards and a TD.
Valley used a 27-yard pass from Bryan Rolfe to take a 7-0 lead with 8:54 left in the first quarter.
Arnett then intercepted a pass on the Pointers’ next series and ran it back 11 yards to put the lead at 14-0 with 7:35 on the clock.
Alex Loop raced 47 yards for a score at the 5:14 mark to extend the lead to 21-0 and a 34-yard pass from Rolfe to Chris Flowers made it 27-0. Tyler Branch blocked the conversion kick.
Arnett had scoring runs of 37 and 15 in the second quarter and it was 41-0 at the half.
The Indians made it 48-0 on a 4-yard run by Brice Jordan to start the second half.
The Pointers refused to quit and answered quickly with an 86-yard touchdown pass play from Townson to Browning less than a minute later. Jordan Overstreet kicked the extra point.
Blake Howard’s 2-yard run put the Indians ahead 55-7 with 2:40 left in the third quarter. South Point scored on the first play after the ensuing kickoff as White and Townson clicked on a 73-yard pass play. Alex Whitt’s conversion kick made it 55-14.
Townson ran 60 yards for a score to begin the fourth quarter and it was 55-21.
The Indians got their own long TD run as Sam Basham got loose on an 84-yard gallop. Ty Howard ran for the conversion.
But the Pointers kept coming and Townson hit Audric Harlow with a 10-yard scoring pass with 1:31 left. Harlow also ran for the conversion.
