CLEVELAND (AP) — With Brandon Weeden and Jason Campbell recovering from concussions, the Browns signed quarterback Caleb Hanie, who could start this week at New England.
The Browns worked out Hanie last week, but decided to sign Alex Tanney off Dallas’ practice squad. Tanney backed up Weeden on Sunday against Jacksonville. Weeden was diagnosed with a concussion following the loss to the Jaguars and is following the NFL’s program for head injuries.
Hanie gives the Browns another option as a starter this week against the Patriots. Coach Rob Chudzinski may choose to start him over Tanney because he has started four regular-season games.
Hanie spent four seasons backing up Jay Cutler in Chicago and spent last season behind Peyton Manning in Denver.
Campbell sustained a concussion last week against Pittsburgh. He has been cleared for football activities but not practice.
