SOUTH POINT —Lawrence County decided to box in center Brett Justice. That opened up a box of South Point guards.

South Point countered the Lady Bulldogs defensive plan to play a box-and-one on the Lady Pointers’ 6-foot center with the shooting of guard trio Abbey Winkler, Haley Rawlins and Brianna Bacon.

Winkler scored 13 points, Rawlins 12 and Bacon 10 as the Lady Pointers posted a 51-37 win Friday.

“They played a box-and-one and packed it around Justice,” said South Point coach Dave Adams.

“That opened it up for the others girls and they hit some shots. We need to be balanced and we were able to do that tonight.”

The Lady Pointers (1-1) held a 46-38 rebounding advantage. Rawlins grabbed 14 and Justice 9.

“Haley had a nice game,” said coach Adams.

Laiken Fitch had 12 points for Lawrence County (1-1).

Rawlins scored 7 points the first quarter including a 3-pointer and Winkler added a triple as South Point took a 12-9 lead.

Bacon had 6 points in the second quarter and Rawlins had 5 more points including another trey as the Lady Pointers built a 29-18 halftime lead.

The scoring slowed in the third quarter but South Point still managed to extend its lead to 37-24.

Winkler then scored 9 points in the fourth quarter and Aundrea Bradburn had all 5 of her points as South Point outscored the Lady Bulldogs 14-13 to secure their first win.
