Virginia Carroll 

Virginia Vee Carroll, 82, of Montague, Mich., passed away peacefully on Dec. 4, 2013. She was born on Jan. 22, 1931, in Cheektowaga, N.Y., to Mary (Fisher) and Leonard Shaffer. Before moving to the White Lake Area in 1974, she lived in Sidney, from 1960-1974, and was raised in Ironton, where she graduated from Ironton High School in 1948. She married George William “G.W.” Carroll on Nov. 2, 1952, in Ironton.

Vee loved gardening and was designated a Master Gardener by Michigan State University, and was also a member of the “Dirt Daubers” in the White Lake Area. An avid cross-country skier into her 60s, Vee won numerous trophies and awards in local races. Vee was a member of Old Channel Trail Women’s Golf League. She spent many hours watching her sons and grandchildren compete in sports as well as enjoying watching sports on TV, Ohio State being her favorite. She also enjoyed shopping and trips to the casino with her circle of friends that included, but were not limited to, Bev Hunt, Terri Hughes, Rose Rollins and many others. She was preceded in death by her parents and five brothers and sisters.

Surviving are her husband, G.W.; sons, Rick (Devon) Carroll, of Howell, Scott Carroll and Bruce Carroll, both of Montague, and Chris (Lezlie) Carroll, of Mooresville, N.C.; grandchildren, Josh Carroll, of Howell, Julie Carroll, of Fowlerville, Jason Carroll, of Howell, Chris Carroll, of Montague, and Chelsea Carroll and Olivia Carroll, both of Charlotte, N.C.; a sister, Barbara Harbage, of Charlotte, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews.

There will be a memorial gathering from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Clock Funeral Home of White Lake, 413 S. Mears Ave., Whitehall, Mich.

Steven Matney

Steven Matney, 50, of Proctorville, died Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2013, at The Ohio State University Medical Center. Arrangements are pending at Hall Funeral Home.

 

 

Jerry Spaulding

Jerry Eugene Spaulding, 71, of Kenova, W.Va., died Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2013, at home. A memorial service will be at 6 p.m. Friday at Hall Funeral Home. Arrangements are by Hall Funeral Home.

 

 

Ray Lockhart

Ray Lockhart, 76, of Lexington, Ky., formerly of Ashland, Ky., died Saturday, Dec. 7, 2013, at his home. He was the husband of Lovonda McClain Lockhart, who survives. Funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Preston Family Funeral Home with pastor Mike Rice officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park Mausoleum with Masonic rite by the officers and brothers of Fred Gross Lodge 953 F&AM. Visitation is from 11 a.m. until service time Friday. Billie Taylor

Billie B. Taylor, 77, of South Point, died Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2013, at Heartland of Riverview. Funeral will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Hall Funeral Home. Burial will be in Miller Memorial Gardens. Nathan Lewis

Nathan Lewis, 85, of Ironton, died Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2013, at the Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, Ky. Arrangements are pending at Tracy Brammer-Monroe Funeral Home.

 

 

Loretta Filkins

Loretta Gullett Filkins, 64, of Ironton, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2013, at her residence. The Ironton native was born Dec. 13, 1948, the daughter of the late Frank and Elsie Hall Gullett.

Ms. Filkins was a 1967 graduate of Rock Hill High School and Shawnee State Community College, where she received her registered nurse’s degree. She was a R.N. for the Lawrence County General Hospital, retiring after 31 years of service with them. She enjoyed landscape painting, spending time with her grandchildren, attending annual family reunions and was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Stephen Filkins; two brothers, Jimmy Gullett and Alan Gullett; and a sister, Brenda Ison.

She is survived by three brothers, Kenneth (Joyce) Gullett, of Lexington, N.C., Ed (Anna) Gullett, of Las Vegas, Nev., and Bill (Jan) Gullett, of Pedro; a sister, Chris (Paul) McDaniels, of Ironton; several nieces and nephews; and two grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Phillips Funeral Home with missionary Ed Gullett Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Lawrence Furnace Cemetery and visitation will be from 6 until 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Patricia Lambert

Patricia Joan Lambert, 79 of Ironton, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2013, at St. Mary’s Medical Center, Ironton.  The Ironton native was born Aug. 5, 1934, to the late Lawrence Justice and Eloise Dickess Ward. She was the widow of Frederick A. (Freddie) Lambert.

Mrs. Lambert was a graduate of  Ironton High School and Huntington Business College. She was a retired court coordinator for Lawrence County Child Support Agency and Wilson Sporting Goods in Ironton. She was the former office manager for Gov. Ted Strickland’s Portsmouth office and worked for Ohio Sen. Jan Michael Long in Columbus. She was very devoted to the Democratic Party and worked countless hours for the party throughout her life. For many years she served on the Lawrence County Democrat Executive Committee. One of the highlights of her life was attending the 1992 inauguration of President Bill Clinton and having the opportunity to meet the President and Ms. Clinton. At the inauguration she served on the hospitality board for the State of Ohio with her very special lifelong friend, Joanne McCown.

In addition to her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by two children, Brenda Lee Lambert and  Charles Edward Lambert; two brothers, Robert Ward and William Ward; and a brother-in-law, Boyce Meeks.

Survivors include a daughter; Dea Jayne (John) Ferrell, of Coal Grove; two sons, Mark F.”Rusty” (Cecilia) Lambert, of Ashland, Ky., and Larry Joe Lambert, of Ironton; two sisters, Norma Lee Meeks and Kathy Sue Ward, of Ironton; three granddaughters, Bethany Lambert (Jarrod) Smith, of Chattanooga, Tenn., Natalie Ferrell (Jason) Hitchcock, of Coal Grove, and Laura Ferrell, of Cincinnati; a grandson, Nick Ferrell, of Ironton; and three great-grandchildren, Madeline Grace, Jackson Gunnar and Baylor Russell Smith.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Friday at Phillips Funeral Home with Minister Phil LeMaster officiating. Burial will follow in Woodland Cemetery.
