Opening reception to be Thursday, Jan. 16

 

Renowned West Virginia artist and sculptor Alison Helm will attend an opening reception at the Ohio University Southern Art Gallery from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 16, to celebrate a month-long exhibit for one of her unique sculptures, “Oil Slick Imprint.”

Made from a combination of painted basswood, stainless steel and cast resin crystals, the sculpture stands more than 8 feet tall.

Helm’s sculptures have been exhibited at various galleries, museums and sculpture parks throughout the United States, Japan, Taiwan and Mexico. In our region, her works have been featured at the Culture Center in Charleston, W.Va.; the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C., and the Huntington Museum of Art in Huntington, W.Va.

As the coordinator of sculpture at West Virginia University for more than 30 years, Helm is currently a graduate adviser and art professor at the university in Morgantown, W.Va. Helm earned a master of fine arts degree from Syracuse University and a bachelor of fine arts from the Cleveland Institute of Art.

The Ohio University Southern Art Gallery is located at 1804 Liberty Ave. in Ironton Room D111 of the Dingus Building. The gallery is open weekdays from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The sculpture by Alison Helm will be on exhibit until Feb. 13.
