SPRING VALLEY, W.Va. — You’ve heard the old saying that “We couldn’t throw it in the ocean if we were standing on the beach.”

The Ironton Fighting Tigers couldn’t throw it in the ocean if they were on an ocean liner Saturday in a 52-27 loss to the Spring Valley Timberwolves.

Ironton (1-18) was 12-of-49 from the field for 25 percent including a dismal 4-of-26 in the first half for a mere 15 percent.

The Fighting Tigers defense held the taller Timberwolves to 24 points despite shooting 11-of-24 for 46 percent.

A layup by Desmond Young got Ironton even at 2-2 to start the game, but the T-Wolves went on an 11-0 run to end the quarter and it was 13-2.

Jacob Kilgore had two straight layups to start the second quarter before Marques Davis hit a layup at the 6:28 mark to end the run. Joe Bowling followed with a putback and Ironton trailed 17-6.

A 3-pointer by Bowling at the buzzer left Ironton down 24-9 at the half.

Isaac Sherman followed up a missed shot to begin the second half and Ironton was down 24-11, but the T-Wolves went on a13-2 run and led 37-13. It was 42-15 at the end of the quarter.

Bowling and Phillip Kratzenberg hit shots to open the fourth quarter and Bowling added a running layup as Ironton cut the deficit to 44-21.

That was as close as Ironton would get the rest of the game.

Bowling had 13 points and seven rebounds for Ironton.

Josh Steele and Kilgore had 15 points each and Jacob Keyser 11 to lead the T-Wolves (8-5).
