Mammograms are an important step in recognizing and preventing breast cancer, but some people simply can’t afford to have the test conducted.

That’s where the Together We Can project and Our Lady of Bellefonte come in. The project is grant funded through the Susan G. Komen Foundation in Columbus, to help provide free mammograms for women who are either uninsured or under insured.

“We service eight counties in Ohio including Lawrence County,” said Together We Can spokesperson, Nicole Wax. “The program will fund clinical breast exams and mammograms for women between 20-39 years old who are having breast cancer symptoms.”

Wax also says that once a month the Our Lady of Bellefonte van visits Lawrence County to give mobile mammograms to women if they are enrolled with the project.

“Once a month the van goes around the county,” Wax said. “Some people can’t get out so we try and come to them. The mobile mammograms are available to any women in our program between the ages of 40-64.”
