Daryl Smoot
Daryl Thomas Smoot, 42, of South Point, died Sunday, March 9, 2014, at King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland, Ky. He is survived by his wife, Melissa Smoot. Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Hall Funeral Home in Proctorville. Roger Pennington
Roger Lee Pennington, 72, of South Point, died Monday March 10, 2014, at the St. Mary’s Medical Center-Ironton Campus. The Ashland, Ky., native was born Sept. 10, 1941, the son of the late Rev. Lee Other Pennington and Ruby Jane Laney Pennington. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Reva Jordan Pennington, whom he married April 6, 1963.
Mr. Pennington attended Ironton High School and is a U.S. Army veteran. He was a former maintenance worker for the Dayton Malleable Iron Company and a former truck driver for the Rollyson Company. He was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Ironton, a member of the American Legion Post No. 0433  and enjoyed woodworking.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Richard (Ronda Baisden) Pennington, of South Point, and Charles (Jeannie Barron) Pennington, of Princeton, W.Va.; three brothers, Clyde Pennington, Larry Pennington and Ronald Pennington, all of Ironton; three granddaughters, Savana Thacker, of Proctorville, Ella Pennington and Elaina Pennington, both of Princeton, W.Va.
Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the First Church of the Nazarene of Ironton with pastor Rob Hale officiating. Visitation will be 10 a.m. until time of service on Thursday at the church. Joan Gunter
Joan “Kay” Hughes Gunter, 73, of Franklin Furnace, passed away Sunday, March 9, 2014, at the Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, Ky. The Ironton native was born Aug. 25, 1940, a daughter to the late Eugene and Ruth (Scherer) Hughes.  Mrs. Gunter was also preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth R. Gunter who passed away in October 1999.
Mrs. Gunter was a 1958 graduate from Green High School. Mrs. Gunter was a retired postmaster relief for the U.S. Postal Service.  She was a member of the Haverhill United Methodist Church. She was active in her church and enjoyed being a Sunday school teacher and helping with VBS. Kay loved her church and church family. She was an avid reader and loved bowling (especially in leagues). Mrs. Gunter was a member of BPW. In addition to her parents and husband, Kay is preceded in death by a nephew,  Michael Hughes.
She is survived by two daughters, Debra Gunter and Haley Hughes, of Franklin Furnace; two brothers, Gene (Linda) Hughes and William (JoAnn) Hughes, of Haverhill; three nephews, Brian (Missy) Hughes, Bill (Brenda) Hughes, of Haverhill, and Jeremy (Pam) Hughes, of Sciotoville; and several great nieces and nephews
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Haverhill United Methodist Church, 43 Haverhill Ohio Furnace Road in Haverhill with pastors Don Meadows and Mike Musser officiating. Interment will follow in Haverhill Cemetery. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Tracy Brammer-Monroe Funeral Home. Pallbearers are Jeffery Massey, Tyler Hughes, Alex Hughes, Brandon Hughes, Jason Richendollar and Jason Meenach and honorary pallbearers are Haley Hughes and Joel Coniff. Nina Potter
Nina Frances Potter, 66, of Flatwoods, Ky., died Friday, March 7, 2014 in Kissimmee, Fla. The funeral will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Bailey Family Funeral Home in Flatwoods with minister Angi Moore officiating. Burial will follow in Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods. Nina Myers
Nina Mae Myers, 93, of Crown City, died Monday, March 10, 2014, at Abbyshire Place in Bidwell.
She was born Dec. 1, 1920, in Ironton, daughter of the late Frank and Pearl Farmer McKee. She was married to Elmer Myers and he preceded her in death. Nina was a supervisor for 32 years at the Gallipolis Developmental Center. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Waterloo Chapter 447 and loved farming. Surviving are a nephew, Dale (Barbara) McKee, of Crown City; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, Nina was preceded in death by twin stillborn sons. Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at the Willis Funeral Home with chaplain Bob Hood officiating.  Burial will follow in Ridgelawn Cemetery. Friends may call Friday 10-11 a.m. prior to the service.

Stewart Cox
Stewart P. Cox, 82, of South Point, died Monday, March 10, 2014, at Cabell Huntington Hospital in Huntington, W.Va.  He is survived by his wife Verna Hamlin Cox.

Grant Bond
Grant Michael Bond Jr. (Bondo), 67, of Ironton, died Tuesday, March 11, 2014. The Lawrence County native was born Dec 2, 1946, the son of the late Grant J. Bond Sr. and Ruth Bond of Ironton. He was a veteran and of the Baptist faith. He worked at Dow Chemical and owned Bond’s Excavating.
Survivors include his wife, Robin Bond, of Ironton; two daughters, Shonna Vincent, of Emporia, Va. and Chelsey Bond, of Ironton; two sons, David Bond of Lancaster and Corey Bond, of Ironton; grandchildren include Alexa Kish, Ethan Bond, Brook Bond, Keira Vincent and Ayla Arthur; two brothers, Brett Bond, of Ironton, and John Bond, of Cary, N.C.; one sister, Nanette Daniels, of Cary, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be 11 a.m. to noon Saturday with the funeral at noon at O’Keefe Baker Funeral Home. Manford Langer will be officiating. Burial will be held in Pine Grove Cemetery.
