Forget the walk-off home run. How about a walk-off bunt?

Bryson Adkins put down a squeeze bunt to score the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning as the St. Joseph Flyers beat the Scotoville East Tartans 4-3 Tuesday.

“It was a perfect bunt. It’s an unconventional way to win a game, but with one out we went for it,” said Flyers’ coach Brent Wirzfeld.

The Flyers got the winning run after Cole Willis hit by a pitch, Chris Lewis singled and Zack McGraw was walked. Adkins then put down the squeeze bunt to score Willis.

Trey Neal — the third Flyers’ pitcher — got the win in relief.

Freshman Bradley Rist went the first four innings striking out seven, walked one and allowing just two hits in his debut.

“Bradley Rist did a nice job in his first varsity game. He threw a lot of strikes. He went above and beyond my expectations,” said Wirzfeld.

Lewis went 4-4 to lead the Flyers’ offense.

St. Joseph broke the scoreless with three runs in the third.

Hunter Pemberton doubled, Joseph Payton was hit by a pitch, and Willis was safe on an error to load the bases.

Lewis singled home two runs and then came around to score when another runner was caught in a rundown.

East tied the game on a two-out, three-run double by Josh Siebert in the sixth inning.

The Flyers (1-1) host Rock Hill Wednesday.
