AID — What a difference a day can make.

After suffering one bad inning in a loss to Portsmouth Notre Dame on Wednesday, the Symmes Valley Vikings bounced back to rally in the seventh inning and edge the Rock Hill Redmen 5-4 Thursday.

“We played much better tonight. We played better defense and (Trent) Thompson threw a heck of a ball game,” said Vikings’ coach Chad Renfroe.

Thompson allowed just three hits, struck out five, walked four and only one run was earned as he went the distance.

Rock Hill scored in the first inning when Aaron Dalton walked, stole second and third and Jack Goodwin hit a sacrifice fly.

The Vikings tied the game in the bottom of the inning on a double by Tanner Mays and Dillon McFann’s base hit.

The Vikings went up 3-1 in the fifth. Mays doubled and McFann had an RBI single. McFann moved up on a ground out and Jonathan Kouns had an RBI single.

Rock Hill got a run in the sixth when Goodwin reached on an error, moved up on a fielder’s choice and scored on an error.

The Redmen took a 4-3 lead with two runs in the top of the inning.

McFann and Drew McClaskey both reached on errors. One run scored on a throwing error and Goodwin singled home the go ahead run.

But the Vikings rallied in the bottom of the inning.

Jacob Klaiber singled, moved to third on two wild pitches and Mays had an RBI single. Mays went to second on a throwing error and moved to third on a sacrifice. Jacob Easthom then singled in Mays with the winning run.

Mays was 3-4, Kouns 2-3 and Thompson 2-3, and McFann 2-4 as the Vikings had 12 hits.
