NEW BOSTON — The names were the same but not the performances.

Joseph Payton was the starting pitcher for the St. Joseph Flyers and Nate Payton for the New Boston Tigers.

But it was Joseph Payton who made a name for himself with a six-hit complete game win as the Flyers beat the Tigers 6-2 Thursday.

Payton struck out two and did not walk a batter.

“Joseph threw really well. He kept the ball down and threw strikes,” said Flyers’ coach Brent Wirzfeld.

The Flyers snapped a scoreless tie with three runs in the third.

Brad Rist, Jacob Clark and Joseph Payton all singled for a run. After Clark was thrown out trying to advance on an overthrow, Cole Willis followed with a triple to score a run and Willis came home on a passed ball.

New Boston got two runs in the bottom of the inning to make it 3-2.

The Flyers got a run back in the fifth when Payton doubled and Seth Kelley and Chris Lewis all singled.

St. Joseph added two insurance runs in the seventh.

Lewis singled, stole second and Bryson Adkins singled to put runners on the corners. Zach McGraw hit a sacrifice fly. Trey Young reached on an error and Adkins scored.

Rist went 3-4, Lewis and Clark 2-3 and Payton 2-4 as the Flyers had 13 hits.
