Adkins, Hornets’ 4×200 relay get state meet berth

LANCASTER — The Coal Grove Hornets will make it a traveling party.

The Hornets will send seven track athletes to the Division III state track meet after getting two more first-place finishes on Friday including a relay team.

Coal Grove junior Brandon Adkins won the high jump with a leap of 6-6 on the second day of the Division III regional track meet to earn a trip to the state track meet next Friday and Saturday at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus.

Also finishing first was the Hornets’ 4×200-meter relay team of seniors Conor Markins, Mason Nance, Ian McFarland and freshman Tanner Henry who had a 1:31.63 clocking.

On Wednesday, the Hornets’ Austen Pleasants was third in the discus and Eli Willis was fourth in the pole vault.

The top four finishers in each event qualify for the state meet.

Coal Grove’s 4×400 boys’ relay team of Henry, Jonathan Joseph, Nance and Adkins was seventh with a 3:38.35 time.

McFarland was sixth in the 200 meters at 23.36 seconds. Garrett Schultz was seventh in the 300 hurdles at 42.3 seconds.

The 4×100 relay team of Markins, Henry, McFarland and Nance was eighth at 50.79,

The Lady Hornets’ Leslie Mulkey ran a 1:01.34 to place seventh in the 400 meters.
