When the spectacular sparks fade on the last Independence Day fireworks next month, it won’t mean the end to the party for the Village of South Point.

The People for the Point are extending America’s birthday celebration an extra day with an event called The Party in the Park on July 5.

“This will be a fantastic event to bring the community together,” South Point council member Mary Cogan said. “We are going to have inflatables, vendors, a cornhole tournament, a hot dog eating contest and live music performing all day.”

The Party in the Park has been a 10-month effort for the village and with roughly three weeks until the event, South Point has received more than $20,000 in contributions from local businesses.

“We first began meeting to plan this back in September of last year,” Cogan said. “I have to credit Chris Smith. This was really his brainchild and it is something that we plan to do yearly.”

The event is free to the public and will kick off with a 5K that morning. A firework display that Cogan promises will be “humungous” will cap the event. For more information on the Party in the Park visit https://www.facebook.com/pages/2014-People-for-the-Point-Party-in-the-Park/628918473809334.
