Ironton man gets prison time for meth charges

An Ironton man arrested by the Ohio State Highway Patrol earlier this year admitted to meth-related crimes Wednesday in Lawrence County Common Pleas Court.

Thomas Smith, 45, of 701 Fifth St., pleaded guilty to a third-degree count of illegal assembly or possession of chemicals for the manufacture of drugs and a fifth-degree count of possession of drugs.

The third-degree felony was reduced from a second-degree charge of illegal manufacture of drugs.

Judge. D. Scott Bowling sentenced the man to three years in prison, a $5,000 fine and suspended his driver’s license.

In other cases:

• Jarred Casey, 25, of 107 Center St., Coal Grove, was sentenced to the STAR Community Justice Center for probation violations.

• Michael Rucker, 54, of 2533 S. Sixth St., Ironton, pleaded guilty to one third- and two fourth-degree counts of trafficking in drugs. Bowling set sentencing for July 2.

• Debbra Otsby, 25, of 9641 County Road 4, Pedro, admitted probation violations and was sentenced to inpatient treatment at Mended Reeds.

• Jason Reed, 34, of 3996 County Road 64, Willow Wood, admitted probation violations and was sentenced to six months in prison. Reed is also facing a second-degree illegal manufacture of drug charge in Judge Charles Cooper’s courtroom. That case is still pending.

• Terra Bennett, 37, of 3490 County Road 181, Ironton, admitted probation violations and was sentenced to Mended Reeds.

• Donna Sanchez, 29, of 3132 Carter Ave., Ashland, Ky., was arraigned on a fifth-degree count of forgery, to which she pleaded not guilty.

Bowling transferred bond from a lower court and added a $5,000 own-recognizance bond. A pretrial was set for July 2.

• Donald Spears, 41, of 225 W. Ross Court, Ashland, Ky., was sentenced to four years probation under intensive supervised probation for a fifth-degree count of breaking and entering, to which he previously pleaded guilty.

Bowling also sentenced the man to STAR and 200 hours community service.

• Mark Taylor, 36, of 48 Township Road 1435, South Point, admitted probation violations and was sentenced to seven months in prison.

• Cora Tomblin, 49, of 212 Heritage Drive, Huntington, W.Va., was arraigned on a fifth-degree count of possession of drugs and a misdemeanor count of possession of drug paraphernalia, to which she pleaded not guilty.

Bowling set bond at $10,000 OR and set a pretrial for July 2.

• Joe Walden II, 21, of 83 Township Road 1212, Proctorville, admitted probation violations and was sentenced to nine months in prison.

• Michael Walker, 40, of 3672 State Route 775, Proctorville, was arraigned on misdemeanor charges of possession of drugs, endangering children and possession of drug abuse instruments, to which he pleaded not guilty.

Bowling set a $5,000 OR bond and a pretrial on July 2.
