Helen Tomko

Jan. 1, 1921 — July 4, 2014

Helen Handley Tomko, 93, of Ironton, died Friday, July 4, 2014, at Sanctuary of Ohio Valley in Ironton. She was born Jan. 1, 1921, in Ashland, Ky., to the late Charles William and Eva Rader Weber. She was the widow of Leonard Anthony Handley and Joseph F. Tomko. She was a U.S. Army Veteran serving as a Second Lt. Army nurse. She was a member of St. Joseph Church, Catholic Women’s Club and mixed choir.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; one son, Wayne Patrick Handley; one daughter, Rita Handley; and sisters Lillian Milen and Mary Elizabeth Insko. She is survived by one daughter, Ann (Bob) Nelson, of Ironton; one daughter-in-law, Kathy Handley, of Cincinnati; grandchildren Patrick (Erin) Handley, of Cincinnati, Christopher Handley, of Cincinnati, Brianna (Russell) Lyons, of Ironton, Rebecca (Donald) Pancake, of Pedro, and the Rev. Thomas Nelson, of Marietta; great-grandchildren Haley Pancake, Isabelle Pancake, Colt Pancake, Zander Pancake, Carson Lyons, Addison Lyons and Colin Handley.

Church was everything.

Visitation will be 6-9 p.m. today at O’Keefe-Baker Funeral Home. Rosary will be at 8:30 p.m. Funeral will be 1 p.m. Monday at St. Joseph Church with the Rev. Thomas Nelson officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

 

 

Richard Cordle

July 27, 1929 — July 2, 2014

Richard “Duck” Cordle, 84, of Greenup, Ky., passed away Wednesday, July 2, 2014, at The Sanctuary of the Ohio Valley in Ironton.

Mr. Cordle was born on July 27, 1929, in Russell, Ky., a son of the late James Henry “Jim-Tom” and Nellie Mae Wilburn Cordle. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Ted Cordle; and four sisters, Okie Metz, Viola Lowery, Martha Fortune and Shirley Stanley.

Mr. Cordle worked in the machine shop at Kentucky Electric Steel, was a past president of United Steel Workers Local 7054 and a lifelong member of VFW post 1168 in Greenup, Ky.

Mr. Cordle is survived by his wife, Iris Ann Bailey Cordle; five sons, Phillip (Faye) Cordle, of Waterloo, David (Julie) Cordle, of Greenup, Ky., Tony (Beverly) Cordle, of Atlanta, Ga., Glen “Bud” (Irene) Bailey, of Beach Island, S.C., and Terry Jenkins, of Greenup, Ky.; a daughter, Lisa Jenkins, of Greenup, Ky.; several grandchildren; great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren; four brothers, Bill (Ruby) Cordle, of Indiana, Ron (Ruby) Cordle, of Russell, Ky., David “Jeek” (Betty) Cordle, of Indiana, and Virgil (Nellie) Cordle, of Greenup, Ky.; one sister, Mary “Nab” Griffith, of Atlanta, Ga.; and a host of extended family and friends.

The funeral will be 1 p.m. Monday at Bailey Family Funeral Home in Flatwoods, Ky., with the Rev. Lloyd L. Bailey officiating. Burial will follow in Kentucky Veterans Cemetery North East in Greenup County, Ky. Military rites will be performed by American Legion Post 93, of Kenova, W.Va.

Charlene Harris

Charlene Fritz-Harris, 88, of Russell, Ky., died Friday, July 4, 2014, at the Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, Ky. Funeral Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Advance Memorial United Methodist Church at 1007 Bellefonte Road in Flatwoods, Ky., with pastor Mark Wilson officiating. Burial will follow at Bellefonte Memorial Gardens. Visitation for family and friends will be 6-8 p.m. Monday at Carman Funeral Home in Flatwoods.
