CINCINNATI (AP) — The Reds put catcher Brayan Pena on the paternity list before the final game of their series against the NL Central-leading Milwaukee Brewers.
Catcher Tucker Barnhart was called up from Triple-A Louisville on Sunday. It’s his third stint with the Reds this season.
Pena flew to Florida to be with his wife as she gave birth. Pena is batting .256 with three homers and 15 RBIs in 59 games, starting at catcher and at first base.
First baseman Joey Votto got a day of rest on Sunday. He missed 23 games with a strained muscle above the left knee, which won’t completely heal during the season. In 23 games since his return from the DL, Votto is batting .250 with 11 RBIs. He hasn’t homered since May 10.
