SOUTH POINT  — Two days after a South Point restaurant was robbed a suspect is behind bars in the Lawrence County Jail.

Leroy Allen Campbell, 28, of 1705 Township Road, Chesapeake, was arrested Monday by sheriff’s deputies and is facing one count of robbery and a common pleas probation violation.

A man entered the Subway restaurant at 348 County Road 410 in South Point on Sunday and allegedly demanded money from the employees at gunpoint, according to a press release from Lawrence County Sheriff Jeff Lawless. The man then allegedly fled in a black Toyota Corolla that had a loud exhaust, according to witnesses at the scene, Lawless said in the press release.

On Monday “investigators received a tip as to a possible suspect name, who was known to drive a similar vehicle with a loud exhaust,” according to the release.

Investigators then went to a home in Chesapeake who identified Campbell from surveillance video taken at the restaurant.

“Our guys worked nonstop at the onset of this thing and developed a suspect early on,” Lawless said. “In tracking him down, he did go into West Virginia and as they were obtaining warrants he robbed another place.”

That was when Pizza Hut in the west end of Huntington was robbed at gunpoint.

“The suspect description was similar to the Subway robbery in South Point,” according to the release.

At 6 p.m. on Monday investigators went to Campbell’s home and arrested him.

“Allen was found to have a plastic toy firearm in his right pants pocket upon arrest,” according to the release. “Clothing worn in both robberies was recovered as well.”

Campbell was then taken to the county jail and will be arraigned before Judge Donald R. Capper in Lawrence County Municipal Court on Friday.
