Report: free agent Jones

signs with Cavaliers

CLEVELAND (AP) — LeBron James won’t be the only player moving from Miami to Cleveland next season.

A person with knowledge of the situation tells The Associated Press that Heat free agent James Jones will be joining James with the Cavaliers. Jones and the Cavaliers agreed to terms on a veteran minimum deal for $1.4 million on Wednesday. The person requested anonymity because an official announcement has not been made.

Jones spent the past six of his 11 NBA seasons in Miami. Last year Jones shot a career-high 46 percent on 3-pointers, but only appeared in 20 games.

He joins Mike Miller, who agreed to a two-year deal on Tuesday, as former James teammates that are following him to Cleveland.

Texas Tech reinstates

highly-touted DB Bethel

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — Texas Tech has reinstated a highly regarded defensive back from Miami who last month broke the jaw of a Lady Raiders basketball player.

Tech athletics spokesman Blayne Beal said Wednesday that Nigel Bethel II will return to the team, but will sit out the first three games of his first season.

Berthel punched Amber Battle her during a June 28 pickup basketball game at the campus recreation center and was dismissed from the football program the next day. However, Lubbock County grand jurors declined to indict Bethel on an aggravated assault charge Tuesday.

Coach Kliff Kingsbury said as more information on the incident came to light, the decision to dismiss Bethel was revisited.

Battle, who has acknowledged shoving Bethel first, will sit out games in November.

Ex-Michigan WR Stonum

gets 3 years probation

PONTIAC, Mich. (AP) — A judge has sentenced ex-Michigan wide receiver Darryl Stonum to three years’ probation for assaulting his girlfriend in suburban Detroit.

The Stafford, Texas, native played 36 games for Michigan in 2008-2010, with 1,008 yards receiving and six touchdowns. The Wolverines dismissed Stonum in 2012 for breaking team rules, and he transferred to Baylor.

On June 25, an Oakland County Circuit Court jury convicted Stonum of felonious assault and domestic violence. The charges involve attacks in Southfield in 2013.

Judge James Alexander issued the sentence Wednesday, also ordering Stonum to perform 500 hours of community service.

Alexander told the 24-year-old that he’s a “huge disappointment who “had it all.” In court Wednesday, Stonum said he loved his ex-girlfriend and knows he’s been “a big disappointment to her” and his family.

No charges filed against

2 Providence players

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — An investigation into an alleged sexual assault by two Providence College basketball players has concluded with no charges, the Rhode Island attorney general’s office said Wednesday.

The office said it presented the investigation to a statewide grand jury, which determined there was insufficient evidence to charge Rodney Bullock. The office said it then determined there was insufficient evidence to ask the grand jury to consider charges against Brandon Austin.

The freshmen were accused of sexually assaulting another student on Nov. 3. Three days later, coach Ed Cooley suspended them from playing in games shortly before the season began for “not upholding their responsibilities as student-athletes.” After a review, the school decided to keep them out for the rest of the season.

The woman complained to the Providence Police Department about the alleged assault in March. Authorities have not released her name.
