MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — West Virginia University police say running back Wendell Smallwood has been arrested on a warrant out of Delaware.

Wilmington police Cpl. Mark Ivey says Smallwood is charged with trying to get a witness to recant statements that implicated a friend of Smallwood’s in a 2012 fatal shooting in Wilmington.

Chief Bob Roberts said Tuesday that police in Wilmington, Delaware, contacted WVU police with a warrant for Smallwood’s arrest on a witness tampering charge.

Roberts says a fugitive-from-justice warrant was issued for Smallwood’s arrest Monday.

The 20-year-old Wilmington resident is being held in the North Central Regional Jail pending extradition. Jail records didn’t indicate whether Smallwood has a lawyer.

WVU coach Dana Holgorsen says he’s aware of the arrest. Smallwood rushed for 221 yards last season as a freshman.
