Carl E. Conaway

Carl Eugene Conaway, 74, of Bastrop, Texas, formerly of Ironton, passed away on June 21, 2014, in Austin, Texas. He was born Aug. 3, 1939, to the late Pearl Conaway and Edith Rice Conaway Bentley.

Carl was a United States Air Force veteran, retiring at the rank of Master Sergeant in 1979 after 22 years of service. He then worked as an electrician for Gore until his retirement. During his early Air Force career, he competed in Golden Gloves boxing.

He is survived by his wife, Linda, of Bastrop, Texas; son, Gene Conaway, of Ohio; daughter, Renee (Michael) Herndon, of Texas; and former daughter-in-law Kimberly Conaway, of Canada. Also surviving him are grandchildren, Emily and Ali Conaway, of Canada, Caroline, Justin, Clarissa and Christina Wright, of Texas; sisters, Shari (Alan) Staton, of Alabama, Janet (Ace) Mende, of Tennessee; a brother, Tim (Nancy) Conaway, of Minnesota; sister-in-law Harriette Conaway, of California; brother-in-law Tom Haney, of Florida; and the mother of his children, Betty Conaway, of Texas.

In addition to his parents, Carl was preceded in death by a daughter, Caroline; brothers, Lloyd and Doug Conaway; and a sister, Jane Conaway.

An accomplished musician, Carl played guitar with several people and bands through the years. He passed down his love of music to his children and grandchildren. May his music live in the hearts of all who loved him.

Services with full military honors were held on July 25, 2014, at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas.

 

 

Judith Sturgill

Judith Ann Sturgill, 70, of Ironton, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2014, at her residence. The Ironton native was born March 14, 1944, a daughter of the late Burt and Florence Brown Goad. She is survived by her husband, Edward Sturgill.

Mrs. Sturgill was a 1962 graduate of Rock Hill High School and a member of the Cannons Creek EUB Church in Pedro. She was a former employee for the Olan Mills Portrait Studio in Springfield, Hoover and Cabletron, where she was an assembly worker. She loved antique cars and riding on pontoon boats. She did genealogy for the Briggs Lawrence County Library, was an amateur radio operator with her general class call letters being KA8JPP.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Janie Goad and Lillian Goad Crutchfield; a grandchild, Brianna N. Sturgill; and a double cousin, Joyce Goad Meadows.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, Brian E. (Barbara) Sturgill, of Kitts Hill; a grandson, Brandon D. Sturgill, of Kitts Hill; a brother-in-law, Herman Crutchfield, of Springfield; and two nephews, Herman Crutchfield Jr. and Tom Crutchfield, both of Springfield.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Phillips Funeral Home with Chaplain Randy Tate officiating. Burial will follow in Mamre Cemetery and visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. To offer condolences to the family, please visit www.phillipsfuneralhome.net.

 

 

Michael Kouns

Michael Leland Kouns passed away Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2014, at his home in Pearland, Texas, after a longterm illness. Mike was born and raised in the Ironton area and graduated from Rock Hill High School in 1973. He was preceded in death by his parents, Barbara and Leland Kouns. Mike is survived by three brothers, George Kouns, of Uriah, Ala., and Dave and Keith Kouns, of Ironton. Also surviving is his beloved companion, Eileen Hamons. No funeral will take place by Mike’s request. He was loved by many and will be missed by family and friends.

 

 

Louise Stephens

Louise Stephens, 89, of Chesapeake, died Sunday, Aug. 10, 2014, at home. Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Hall Funeral Home and Crematory in Proctorville. Burial will follow in Rome Cemetery. Danny Salyers

Danny Lee Salyers, 54, of Ironton, died Sunday, Aug. 10, 2014, at his residence. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. today at Slack and Wallace Funeral Home in South Point.
