LLOYD, Ky. — The early bird gets the win, but the early organizer gets the win.

The St. Joseph Female Flyers got their preseason soccer workouts started earlier this year in their second season and it paid off with an 8-1 rout of the Greenup County Lady Musketeers in Monday’s season opener.

“We’re coming into the beginning of the season in much better form than the same time last year,” said St. Joseph coach Kyle Weatherholt. “We put a lot of work into the preseason which we didn’t get last year when we were just trying to put a team together.”

Lynsey Booker scored three goals while Sidney Payne and Kaylee Sheridan each had a goal and two assists to lead the Female Flyers who built a 6-0 first half lead as they coasted to the win.

“We started off strong tonight and kept it up for the entire 80 minutes,” said Weatherholt.

Emma Saxby added a goal and an assist and Amber Neal scored a goal in the win.

“We’ve kept the nucleus of the team plus added some strong seniors who didn’t play last year. We’ve also got some young players coming in that are playing well and will put in some valuable minutes,” said Weatherholt.

The Female Flyers host Northwest at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.
