SOUTH POINT — What size advantage?

Even though the Sciotoville East Tartans had a big size advantage on the offensive line that featured –foot-5, 310-pound Ohio State commit Tyler Gerald and 6-4, 285-pound Nick Basham at the tackles, the South Point Pointers used their speed and quickness for a 42-6 win Friday.

“Our defensive line was outweighed by their offensive line, but our kids played tough,” said Pointers’ coach Rick Marcello.

“The first drive of the game they had some success, but we went up tempo and we were able to wear them down.”

East (0-2) took an early 6-0 lead on a 1-yard run by Michael Stiltner with :249 left in the quarter.

But South Point (1-1) answered with a 13-yard scoring run by Mason White and Jordan Overstreet’s conversion kick put the Pointers ahead for good at 7-6 with 37 seconds on the clock.

A turnover gave the ball back to the Pointers and they wasted no time making it 14-6 on a 20-yard pass from Drew Adams to White. Alex Whitt kicked the conversion.

The lead went to 21-6 with 9:26 left in the half on a 72-yard punt return by Stephan Wagoner. Overstreet had the conversion.

“Special teams played a great game. Wagoner’s put return was huge,” said Marcello.

James Leonard’s 1-yard touchdown run at the 7:47 mark extended the lead to 27-6.

South Point got a safety to begin the second half as Reed Murnahan tackled an East running back in the end zone for a 29-6 lead.

After the free kick, the Pointers scored on a 34-yard scamper by Leonard and it was 36-6.

A series of penalties on the conversion forced Overstreet to kick a 42-yard extra point.

South Point capped the scoring on a 15-yard pass from backup quarterback Brandin Jackson to Brandon Layne with 7:12 to play.

Leonard ran 10 times for 89 yards and two touchdowns while White had 63 yards on eight attempts and a score. He also caught three passes for 20 yards and a touchdown.

Adams hit 4 of 7 passes for 15 yards.

The Pointers visit Boyd County, Ky., on Friday.
