Turnovers, penalties hurt Redmen in loss
PEDRO — The Rock Hill Redmen won the battle but lost the war.
The Redmen outgained the Oak Hill Oaks and outplayed them in the second half, but turnovers and penalties proved to be their downfall in a 28-6 loss to the Oak Hill Oaks Friday.
Rock Hill (1-2) suffered three interceptions and some key penalties that stalled drives. The Redmen finished with 327 total yards with 194 coming on the ground and 133 through the air.
Drew McClaskey ran seven times for 72 yards while Chance Blankenship was held to 42 yards on 14 attempts.
Oak Hill (2-1) had 286 total yards with 156 rushing and 130 passing. Chris Coy ran six times for 106 yards and Willy Harris eight times for 42 yards.
Jonathan Harrison returned the opening kickoff 55 yards to the Rock Hill 30 and a few plays later Clayton Christensen hit Harris with a 17-yard scoring pass. Christensen’s conversion kick made it 7-0 at the 10-minute mark.
Rock Hill drove to the Oak Hill 29 only to have the drive end on an interception.
But the Redmen came back with an 80-yad, 6-play march highlighted by a 64-yard pass from Gabe Marzicola to Shawn Wilds to the 1-yard line.
Marzicola scored on the next play and the Redmen trailed 7-6
The Oaks went 75 yards in nine plays capped by Coy’s 22-yard scoring run and it was 14-6 at the 5:24 mark.
The Redmen marched to the 7-yard line but a holding penalty pushed them back to the 17 and a third down pass was intercepted at the 1-yard line.
With time running out, Christensen hit Harrison with a 47-yard pass and a touchdown with just seven seconds on the clock and it was 21-6 at the half.
The Oaks got the only touchdown of the second half when Harrison returned an interception 18yards for a touchdown late in the third quarter.
Rock Hill outgained the Oaks 100 to 82 in the second half.
