Wreaths goal lauded

While the ceremony may not be on the scale of the annual event at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C., the Wreaths Across America event locally to honor Lawrence County’s veterans is still an endeavor that needs support.

The 2013 event in the veterans’ section of the Woodland Cemetery in Lawrence County was one of the more than 800 commemorations nationwide.

We applaud the efforts of all those who have contributed whether it was the organizers of the event, the volunteers or those who sponsored wreaths.

The proceedings slated for Saturday, Dec. 13, will coincide with all other events taking place throughout the United States along with veterans cemeteries internationally.

The goal for the organizers in their third year is to lay nearly 1,000 wreaths throughout the veterans’ section of the cemetery.

The strong response over the first two years provides a good understanding of what the event is about and what the organizers wish to achieve.

This event should become an annual staple, however, much like the events surrounding Memorial Day to serve to commemorate all those who served for our country, and we encourage residents to make time to visit between Dec. 13 and Jan. 10, 2015.

If someone would like to donate or sponsor a wreath for $15, they can do so at Citizens Deposit Bank.

Ultimately, we can never forget our veterans and continue to honor their sacrifice through the holidays is a wonderful tribute.
