SOUTH POINT — Turn it over and watch the South Point Pointers turn it on.

The Pointers took advantage of turnovers by Lincoln County and rolled past the Panthers 42-14 on Friday.

“We won the turnover battle because of our defense. We caused several turnovers and we took advantage of our field positions,” said Pointers’ coach Rick Marcello. “Our defense has played well all year.”

The strong defensive effort was led by linebacker Reed Murnahan who had 15 tackles.

Offensively, Pointers’ quarterback Drew Adams was 13 of 16 passing for 172 yards and two touchdowns with an interception. Jacob Damron caught five passes for 43 yards, Stephen Wagoner had two receptions for 54 yards and a score while William Borders caught two passes for 20 yards and a TD.

South Point (2-2) rushed just 17 times for 63 yards due to the short field position. Mason White had 18 yards on five carries and James Leonard 17 yards on three attempts. Each had a touchdown.

The Panthers (0-4) took a 7-0 lead with 7:52 left in the second quarter on a 5-yard run by Austin Scraggs and Tristan Roberts’ conversion kick.

But Hunter Starr forced a fumble and Wagoner scooped up the ball and returned it 57 yards for a touchdown with 5:36 left in the half. Jordan Overstreet’s kick tied the game.

Another turnover enabled White to run 5 yards for a touchdown with 1:27 left in the half. Alex Whitt kicked the extra point for a 14-7 lead.

South Point got the ball back again and Adams teamed up with Wagoner on a 48-yard scoring pass with just 12 seconds on the clock. Overstreet added the conversion.

The Pointers added to their lead less than two minutes into the second half on a 14-yard scoring run by Leonard and Whitt’s kick that made it 28-7.

Wagoner then electrified the crowd with a 69-yard punt return for a score. Overstreet added the conversion and it was 35-7.

“He’s a speedster,” Marcello said of Wagoner.

The Pointers’ final touchdown came on a 12-yard pass from Adams to Borders with 4:37 left in the third quarter. Whitt kicked the conversion.

The Panthers got a touchdown with 1:32 left to play on a 5-yard run by Shane Wells.
