WHEELERSBURG — It sounded like the song by The Monkees who sang, “This Just Doesn’t Seem To Be My Day.”
Nothing seemed to go right for the St. Joseph Female Flyers who fell 3-2 Saturday in a soccer game with the Wheelersburg Lady Pirates.
“Today was just one of those days where nothing seemed to go right,” said Female Flyers’ coach Kyle Weatherholt. “It wasn’t a lack of effort, but we just couldn’t get it going today.”
Wheelersburg scored in the 12th minute but St. Joseph tied it two minutes later when Sidney Payne broke down the sidelines and passed to Lynsey Booker for the goal.
The Female Flyers took a 2-1 lead when Kaylee Sheridan got an unassisted goal at the 35-minute mark. But the Lady Pirates tied the game just before the half on a shot from 30 yards away and got the deciding goal in the 75th minutes.
“The second half was frustrating. We were on the attack and had possession more of the time but couldn’t put one in the goal,” said Weatherholt.
“We hit the post three times and had several shots go just wide. Six or seven corner kicks dropped into the 6-yard box only to be cleared away by their back line.”
St. Joseph won the earlier meeting but Weatherholt gave the Lady Pirates credit for their win.
“Their game plan was to keep players back and defend strong, then get us on the counter attack and they executed it well. They were a completely different team than we faced earlier in the season,” said Weatherholt.
“Their coach has done a great job getting them well-organized. They showed up ready to play and they played good soccer for 80 minutes.”
St. Joseph hosts Portsmouth West Monday.
