PORTSMOUTH — Josh Zornes is starting his junior golf season with the Shawnee State Bears with a lot of success.

Zornes shot a 76-75 for a 151 score over the two-day second annual Dye Intercollegiate Invitational at the Urbana Country Club to finish sixth overall as he helped the Bears place seventh as a team.

Teammate Drew Oxley of Chesapeake finished with a 172 over the 36 holes.

The Bears were 322-324 over the two-day event as a team in their first tournament of the season.

Next up was the University of Pikeville Invitational and Zornes earned all-tournament honors as he shot a second-day best 70 over the final 18 holes to force a three-way playoff for medalist honors at the Stone Crest Golf Course.

Pikeville’s Will Boyd birdied the second hole of the playoff to win.

Zornes’ 2-under pass round helped him rally from a six-shot deficit on day one.

Shawnee State was fourth overall with a 620 team total including 305 the second day.

Oxley placed 19th overall while freshman Luke McGraw of Ironton improved his second day score by 10 strokes and shot a 79 to finish tied for No. 36.
